Crest Ridge Saddle Pads

Saddle pads are extremely important and useful for ensuring a proper fitting saddle for your gaited horse and mule.  Saddle pads can also provide significant protection for your horse's back. Crest Ridge Saddlery is committed to providing only the highest quality saddle.

Crest Ridge 100% natural wool contoured saddle pads

Over the years I have said this to many of you… “the best protection for your horse back is a 100% Wool Saddle Pad with a channel down the spine to provide additional clearance, vent the heat and preventing sore backs and spine rubs”

Crest Ridge Wool Felt Saddle Pad

Have you ever seen a hatter clean and reshape a black felt cowboy hat? He does it with steam.  When we place a well fitted saddle on your horse’s back, a 100% wool felt pad, and use that same pad on that same horse with the same saddle within 4 or 5 rides the horses’ body heat starts to mold that pad to a perfect fit.  If there is a place that is a bit tight, or if your horse is a bit asymmetrical, within a few rides this pad molds itself to a perfect shape.

Crest Ridge Saddlery now makes our own line of wool felt saddle pads.   Bringing production of saddle pads in-house allows us to insure consistent quality, customer service and offer our customers a superior product at lower cost.  Our  effort produces what we feel is the best saddle pad on the market today. The Crest Ridge Saddle Pad is a premium saddle pad designed for use with a single horse over time.  These custom made pads feature a cut-out to provide additional clearance over the spine and are only available from Crest Ridge Saddlery.

If you have a horse that is out of condition and you know that he will change shape as you put the miles on him, Crest Ridge Saddle Pads will change with him. The felt is shaped the same steam that the hatter uses, only this time the steam machine is your horse. Cheaper wool felt pads on the market are made of needled felt which pad cannot compress.

The Crest Ridge Saddle Pad is durable, designed to last for 2,000 hours of hard riding.  If you are riding 5-hours a week, this pad will last over 7 years.  The Crest Ridge Saddle Pad is likely the last pad you will have to purchase for your gaited horse or mule.

Crest Ridge Saddle Pads are offered in 3/4" and 1" thicknesses.  We offer each pad in grey (natural) and black.   The black pads are a bit more expensive to account for the extra step of dying the wool.

IMPORTANT: Cheaper wool felt pads on the market are made of needled forced fiber felt which pad cannot compress or maintain your horses shape. These pads often contain synthetic material. Our pads are 100% wool felt and are made of the finest material available.

We have discontinued selling 5-Star pads.  We want to reassure our many customers that the 5-Star pads are excellent saddle pads.  Unfortunately, 5-Star pads have become too expensive and their customer service has not been consistently at a level acceptable to us.  We have worked very hard over the past year to develop a cost-effective alternative to the 5-Star pads without sacrificing quality or performance.  Our Crest Ridge Saddle Pad is the result of those efforts.

For sanitary reasons, your Crest Ridge Saddle pad is the only item that we sell that are non returnable for any reason because of the nature of the item. We would never want to be responsible for the spread of ringworm or other fungus borne skin diseases.

Customer Comments on Saddle Pads.

Hi Debra, I know you're very busy but I just wanted to let you know I received the wool saddle pad today.  Where do I begin? The pad is very good quality and a TRUE 1" thick. You sent it out, I don't know how, soooo quickly. It could have ended there, but you suggested I try the dish towel adjustments to see if I can further fit my horse with shims on top of the pad. I haven't done that yet, but I will. In these days with no customer service or worse yet customer service "farmed out" to some other country I so appreciate your attention to individual need. I'm soon to be 60 and, because I love horses and saddles I've owned MANY of both. If I have to refer anyone to a comfy, personal fit, American-made saddle that's in a "affordable for most" price range I will refer then to Crest Ridge and you. I LOVE my $800 saddle and, believe me, I've had the pleasure of placing my seasoned butt into saddles that cost many$$$$$$ more and didn't deliver the way your little saddle has.  Happy Trails, Jody Soave April 2011

I just received your notice about now manufacturing the new pads.  I purchased the 3/4" pad about 6 months ago and wanted to let you know what Penny Stone (www.wholehorsepower.com), TTouch specialist, had to say about it during our recent saddle fitting.  I just purchased a new Barefoot Arizona treeless saddle with the specialty pad they offer. When fitting the new saddle, Penny said my C/R pad is actually BETTER for my horse with the Barefoot because it cannot squish down, as the other does, and provides more protection for my horse. I know you are aware of how fabulous your pads are, but I was unaware of how diverse they are. Thank you again for a great product. Linda Donovan, Austin, TX (March 2011)

I posted two white towel tests (see “Checking Saddle Fit” for information on the white towel test) and had many people responded with thoughts. Thank you so much for them. I also want to send out a big thank you to Deb for her suggestions. I did purchase a cut out saddle pad (Crest Ridge 5-Star Pads) as she suggested and WOW what a different in my horse's movements. I did not have problems with behavior with the saddle fit but after the new pad realized I did have movement issues. My guy moves so much nicer with the new pad. He is freer in the shoulder and his gaits are smoother and easier to ride. I was so happy when I finished my ride yesterday. This has really made me realize that saddle and saddle pad fit are sooo important, and that you can suffer from poor movement and stiffness just with the wrong pad. Thank you again Deb for your insight and help in getting my guy feeling more conformable in his saddle and make his movements feel so much better to me and I am sure feeling so much more conformable for him.
